Currently it is not possible to change the nodereference during a node edit when using nodereference_url.

This is silly. There should be no 'fallback' behavior, or at least there should be the option to display the selectbox, autocomplete (TODO item), or option list for users with the proper permission. I understand that the intent of the nodereference_url widget is to simplify complex node creation for users. However, users make mistakes and a node referenced to the wrong URL cannot be corrected by simply editing the node.

I want the functionality of the link to node creation prepopulating the nodereference field. I don't want that to lock my users' choice for all eternity.

Can it possibly prepopulate or affect the default of a chosen widget? Select Box, Option List?

The usage scenario is a gallery created as per the lullabot demonstration.

You can just use Prepopulate and Custom Links if you don't want the default value behavior of the Node Reference URL Widget. If this module were not a widget, then it would be completely misnamed. Since other modules provide exactly what you're requesting (and I knew this before creating the module, which serves a different purpose) this won't be changed.

Won't fix? This is ridiculous. Like the OP said, users make mistakes.

I for one am using the Views_Gallery module, which makes use of this module. Don't get me wrong, this module has been a godsend, but my clients want to move items from GalleryA->GalleryB, and that at the moment cannot be done. Telling them to reupload everything about a content node is ludicrous.

I'm hoping a small fix will come through on this one, rather than doing it myself
