I spent a lot of time trying to find a way to add a specific class to all links output by a node-based Views display, based on the value of an excluded field. The idea was to display a block with recent nodes, with a little icon identifying nodes which the user hasn't read. I managed to get this to work using the following in template.php:

I have tried to achieve the same results with comments, in order to be able to style comment entries which the user hasn't viewed yet. I just couldn't sort this out.
