A pretty general question, yes, but do you know of any current modules that increase forum functionality (and possibly looks)?
Because seriously, my forums are pitiful. Please tell me what you think is good (And be sure to include links, please.) Thank you very much!

Changing Looks
You can change your looks a great deal not nly for your entire site, but also forum specific changes. Pretty much however you want your forums or site to look, Drupal can do it, thanks in part to being able to override many theme functions. Be sure to check out the theme developer's guide, PHPTemplate snippets and PHP snippets.

I followed the instructions here:

which nicely sets up your forums similiar in layout to phpbb. It uses the flatforum.module for the post counts.
Afterwards, take a look at the files like node-forum.tpl.php and flip through the template handbook mentioned in the other post.
