Fatal error: Call to a member function getEntry() on a non-object

Hi,

as requested in #11 of #451788: Fatal Error: Call to undefined function read_exif_data I'm opening this as a separate issue (this was originally posted on May 11, 2009)

I'm getting a similar error like mentioned in #451788 with the stable release version 5.x-1.2:

Fatal error: Call to a member function getEntry() on a non-object in /var/www/drupal/sites/all/modules/exif/exif.module on line 174

This error prevents images from being uploaded, thus setting the priority to "critical".

System environment: Drupal 5.17, LightTPD 1.4.19, Server API: FastCGI, PHP 5.2.6-1+lenny3, MySQL 5.0.51a @ Debian GNU/Linux "Lenny"

EXIF section from phpinfo:
