I am trying to create a sub-navigation menu for certain categories on my website. I have a portfolio of artwork on my site and I tag certain posts in the portfolio with an additional sub-category (advertising, print, digital...) so that I can navigate to areas of just advertising work, etc...

On my website I have two columns and a header. The header contains my main navigation bar, the left column (sidebar first) contains the administer block and the right column contains all my postings.

What I am trying to do is create a sub-navigation for certain categories on my site which will be visible only in certain categories. For example, I don't want my portfolio-specific sub-navigation block to show up in my blog area. I understand how to create and add a block globally to the left column (sidebar first) but I don't want my category-specific blocks to show up throughout the entire site.

I've tried a few of the modules, Nice Menus, Persistent Menus, Views...and none of them do what I am looking for. Is there a module which will help me solve my problem? Is JavaScript the answer?
