Maxlength works for me only with textareas. If I enable this for textfield, counter works correctly but the value won't save.

Could you describe which textfield(cck or node title) and which text you insert.

Sorry, but it works fine indeed. I had patched a lot of modules and one of these broke it. With clean versions everything works fine. Sorry about this.
