I have turned Feed Images on but instead of the image displaying in my blocks, the fully qualified, proper URL to the images display. Is this a configuration thing? Apologies in advance if it is.

I was having the same problem but it is a settings issue(I just figured it out after reading your post). Go to edit the feeds and go to Input format and click on full HTML. That should bring the images into your feed. I wish there was a little note saying that when I looked over it.
