Now my site is "Drupal powered" :-)

dvb001 - April 14, 2006 - 19:21

It has taken 5 months to complete my revamped, drupal powered site. It wasnt the fault of Drupal. Being a Lazy learner, dump-head, I couldnt understand things very easily. Hope now I have learnt atleast 10% of Drupal. This is my first site using Drupal. Most of you can not enjoy the content as it is in Tamil (One of the Indian languages). But just look and feel the design work. Please dont laugh.

Hopefully, my next site will be much better than this. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all, the geeks who helped me to find solutions whenever I posted my problems in the forum, snippet contributors and the Drupal team.

Very soon the same site will be releashed in English also. No wonder if I go for few other languages further. Drupal has opened many doors for me.

Did you ever get your site done in English? I can't seem to find it. Please point me in the right direction.

No worries, someone will extend your translation, later everyone will have full working translation. Thats the beauty of opensource.
Keepup teh good work.

At long last, a drupal site

Venkat-Rk - April 16, 2006 - 04:25

At long last, a drupal site in Tamil. Good work Babu, especially with the simple design and structuring of the site.

One problem, though. The fonts dont display properly in Firefox 1.5 even when the encoding is UTF-8. I am also additionally using the Padma firefox extension which converts proprietary Indic fonts to UTF-8, but the problem remains.

Are you using dynamic fonts? It is fine on IE, but with so many people using FF these days, you may want to address that.

And, I second the other requests for contributing your Tamil translation back to drupal. There have been some sporadic efforts to build one, but yours could really get it going.

Thanks

dvb001 - April 16, 2006 - 19:50

Thank you ambiance7.

Thanks Ramdak. I havent yet checked my site with Firefox 1.5. I am using FF 1.0.3 version and having absolutely no problems. As there wasnt any problem in the lower version thought, it must work well in higher version also. Thanks again for enlightening the problem. I will immediately test my site in 1.5 and try to fix the problem. By the way, I am not using any dynamic fonts.

And about submitting my translation, I will do it as soon as possible. For my use, I have altered most of the modules in drupal according to my need. So, my current translation file wont be suitable for generic drupal modules. I may need to change the line numbers. Certainly I will work on it and submit the translation with in a week time.

Firefox 1.5.02 ok with your site

dvb001, I just checked the site again using FF 1.5.2 and the characters don't display properly whereas they display fine in IE 6.0

It seems ok

dvb001 - April 17, 2006 - 19:04

Ramdak, I installed FF 1.5.0.2 and checked my site. For me everything is ok. I dont see any differences. No idea what causes trouble in your Fire Fox. If possible, please mail me a snapshot image of how it appears on your FF browser. ( babu@arusuvai.com )

Thanks

Venkat-Rk - April 18, 2006 - 01:07

Sure, I will send you a screenshot. Meanwhile, can you check your browser and tell me which encoding you are using in Firefox to view the page? Mine is UTF-8, but I still get this problem.

Mine is also utf-8

dvb001 - April 18, 2006 - 06:15

Mine is also utf-8. i think, it is automatically chosen as we set the Content type meta tag "charset=utf-8". So, there should nt be any problem for the browsers to choose the encoding type. I doubt, your extra addition "Padma firefox extension" may be the culprit. Not sure. May be your OS. I am on windows XP. I heard windows 2000 has some problems in displaying Tamil unicode fonts. In that case, your IE also should have the same problem. Not able to guess.

Thanks for replying. This

Venkat-Rk - April 18, 2006 - 11:49

Thanks for replying.

This is getting more and more curious. I am using WinXP Pro-SP2 on one latop and WinXP Pro-SP1 on the other, both are running FF 1.5.0.2 with encoding set to utf-8 and both have the same problem displaying your site.

Incidentally, the Padma extension was just my attempt to rectify this issue. The page wasn't displaying properly even prior to that so it seems unrelated to the extension. Incidentally, on both the systems, IE 6.0 displays the page fine.

I am going to mail you a screenshot.

Hi Ramdak

vprajan - July 14, 2006 - 20:33

Iam using a most recent version of FF. that is, 1.5.0.4. The dvb001 site was fine..

I guess the problem might be.. you would not have installed Tamil Font on ur system.. Moreover, There is a collection of tamil fonts available... download and install it..

It will surely work..

Team up here for tamil translation work..
