I am using the ad_blueprint theme. There are plenty of places where content could be placed: left sidebar, left sidebar2, above header, .... In general there is big left sidebar, "main" column (the central column where most of the content is shown) and big right sidebar. But, there is a big left and right margin of central (main) column (about 60px each). When somebody is using old 1024x768 pixels screen, the main text is too narrow.

Obviously I have to modify some .css file in order to decrease both: the left and right margins, but I can not figure out which parameter to change. Can somebody help me with an advice?

using the firefox browser with the firebug addon will aid you in working with css.
