Show the thumbnail of the image used in a node and the node title linking to node

Is there a "Check if node has an image and thumbnail it snippet"?
By this I mean for example at www.msn.com every story on the homepage has a thumbnail for it. I want to write the title of the node and show the image attached or included in a small size on the homepage. When I click on the image or title, I want it to show the node. Is it possible?
Should I accomplish it by attaching every node a symbolic thumbnail and showing it with a snipplet?

You can try excerpt module

What you can do is try the excerpt module. Creating a node, it gives you an extra text area to fill in (excerpt), which is the short text on the node overview page (home page). In this area you can use the small images (thumbnails), and -for example- display them "inline" with the text.

The title then, will point to the node itself, of which the text is defined by the usual body text area. If you define an image in this body text area, it will be displayed at the node page. If you don't, it won't. Simple as that (:

The nodes are flexinodes. However, the idea of the thumbnails at the overview page (which in this case is not the home page but a taxonomy based page) is the same.

Automatically Grab an Image for Teaser?

Has anyone tried modifying this module (or know of another module) for taking the thumbnail (or custom-defined) version of an image created by the image module, and inserting it into the teaser?

...because that's what I'm going to be trying to do. Or should I have used a different image attaching module to begin with, such as image_assist instead of upload_image if I wanted to control where in a node my associated images were displayed?
