I'm using MAMP, and recently upgraded to snow leopard. Doing so upgraded my system's php, causing MAMP to fail. I fixed the issue by pointing my terminal to MAMP's php configuration. I think it would be useful to document this on the Drush page or readme.txt. Maybe something like this:

By default drush uses your system's php configuration and works best with PHPx.x. If you're using a server package like MAMP and are experiencing trouble you may need to point your terminal to your MAMP php configuration by doing the following:

edit your .bash_profile file
and add something like:
export PATH="/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin:$PATH"

we try to detect MAMP for you. In most cases, noone needs to do anything. It is really beyond drush's mission to get people's CLI PHP working properly.
