learner progression tracker

Hey everyone

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this and if not please show me the way.

We're building a learning platform style site at the moment where users have different subjects and different tasks that they can complete. We want to incorporate a function that tracks their progress in terms of the tasks they have completed with regards to each subject. We want to give each user a stand-alone box that allows them to see the progress that they have made. We have lots of theoretical ideas but don't really know where to start, or if there is something out there that we havn't found that does the job. This is purely a general discussion so please any ideas are welcome.
