Struggling to create link directory with an alphabetical index page that looks just like the Taxonomy VTN master index page

I am trying to create a link directory on a site and I am struggling to get the links to display in an index page the way I would like. I do not like the views glossary view.

Here is the background of the links:

1. The links are being stored with a CCK link field
2. The index directory page should display the link title and not the link

Here is what I don't want or have already researched:

1. I do not like the views glossary view because it forces the user to have to click on each letter if they want to see everything that is available. This is not how I want to implement the directory.

Here is how I would like the index directory page to look:

I want my index page to look exactly like the index page created for Taxonomy VTN, but with link titles and not taxonomy terms. Here is a link to a Taxonomy VTN index page sample image.

This is exactly what I want. I just need it to display link titles that work as links and not taxonomy terms.

Can anyone please help me figure out how to create a link directory page that looks exactly like the index page for Taxonomy VTN? Searching in Google and on here, I have seen a few questions about the same issue, but with no real answers.

Links & Taxonomy VTN look

Did you try to use views with the [insert_view] tag in a page with a table?

I would think that would work just fine as long as you can cut the view in 2 or 3 columns without having to change you page too often...

Otherwise, if you can finance the project, I can help with a true module...
