how to add a sliding region

im trying to add a region to my theme, similar to rootcandys slider.

Ive added the region to my page.tpl and .info file. ive added the script into my .js file and ive set the theme in my theme.css. the regions there, but doesnt open.

So i tried to copy how it is in rootcandy. Ive done the.tpl .info .js and .css almost exactly the same. but nothing changed. I looked around root candy and the only extra thing i can find is something in the template. But whenever I try to add the code from rootcandy template file to my themes template file I get a parse error.

Are there any tutorials on how to add a region like rootcandys slider? or does anyone know whats causing this parse error in my theme?
