So, I'm a huge Drupal fan, working on several of my own Drupal-based site, and also a user of platforms like Tribe.net.

While Tribe.net, Friendster.com, Orkut.com, etc platforms provide significant FOAF-based communities, they are essentially "walled gardens"... Where do platforms that foster "local" communities like Drupal, Moodle, etc fit into this equation?

IMHO, I can foresee a "meshed-online-social-networking" platform where Drupal (and others) is extended so that each individual Drupal (or other compatible solutions) communities and members can find each other just as easy as I can find tribes and members on a place like Tribe.net.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who see this picture... Is anyone working on this?

Cheers,
John Lorance

These are great module suggestions for sure and facilitate group-like and social networking like behaviour within a given site; however, having access to a larger eco-system of folks (and their ideas) across Drupal sites and networks with a navigation system (maybe thats FOAF-like, maybe now) with a directory service would be sort of the holy grail in terms of finding otherss.

I'm also leading this discussion over on TechSoup (http://www.techsoup.org/socialnetwork) today and tomorrow and the community discussion over there are proving to be very interesting. There's a great deal of interest not only in online community but the larger networking question I'm posing here at least in the non-profit community that is focused there.
