Issue Summary
I've been on a bit of a crusade to get better support built into Drupal for complex publication workflows and content moderation. There is one last chance to get some basic state support in the D7 core, during the current "code slush' period. Take a look at #579654: Add "state" and "last_state" to node_revisions table.
Because it is an underlying API change, and not too "featury," it can still make it in, but developer support is needed and time is fast running out. This change would vastly improve the tools available to Contrib developers working on modules like Workflow. Please lend a hand if you can.
