I'm trying to lock the editing of certain user profile fields so only users in a given role can edit them. I'd like the fields to show along with the rest of the user profile without opening them up to the user. Is there a good way to do this?

You can convert your profiles in node by using conten profile module and then you can grant access to the fields using cck's field accessibility module
