Hi I'm using Drupal as a base for a site for an organisation at my college. I've been told to make the site similar to this one http://www.ecell-iitkgp.org/ . So what modules and theme would do the trick? I'm particularly interested in their central display for updates, and the menus on the left sidebar.

Thank you very Much!!!

There's nothing terribly complex about this:
- look through the themes until you find one you like
- the central updates would probably best be done with the Views module
- the arrangement of the central front page could be done with the Panels module (or maybe something else)
- the menus look as if they've got a bit of Ajax work - search for the various module menus and see what looks likely

thanks for the fast response. I'm a complete beginner at Drupal so thats why I haven't a clue about even the basic modules.

This site is invaluable because of the quality of the search: http://drupalmodules.com/

Although I have to say that Drupal.org's new faceted search is good now too. You just have to learn how to use it (ie. refining the initial search by choosing filtering options from the right-side menu).

I also love this page: http://drupal.org/project/usage
It's an easy way to find the most popular modules (and therefore the most stable and updated), to track up-and-coming modules and trends, and also just to browse for interesting sounding modules while you have a coffee break.

Just be aware that you can't keep adding as many modules as you like. Assuming you'll be using the college's dedicated server, which will be in heavy use for other projects and websites, including the college's main site, I think you should aim to keep the number of additional modules to below 30. That sounds like a lot, but once you've added the major ones for basic functionality, and you find that you need a module for every tiny little feature, bugfix or altering default behaviours, it really isn't much. Choose and prioritise carefully.

There are so many Drupal modules, that it can be really hard for a newcomer to figure out where to start.

It can be interesting to read users' lists of their favorite modules. FYI, here's a list of mine, with links at the end to some other people's lists.
