One feature I'd really like to see is the possibility to have both public (accessible by anonymous users) galleries *and* protected galleries (available only to authenticated users) without using personal galleries.

You ought to be able to do it with the "Category Permissions". Under Admin > User > Configure > Category Permissions, you can choose what class of user can see which topics in your taxonomy. So you could have one "Public" set and one "Private" set pretty easily.
