By requiring user input during the installation profile, OpenPublish prevents itself from being auto-deployed by drush and therefore Aegir.

If the user input stage could be pulled into a second 'phase' that only starts once the site is initially installed it would open up new powerful opportunities for deploying hyper-local news sites in a very low cost way through Aegir.

In the mid term, there is a discussion about the best way to do this through the drupal install system itself: http://drupal.org/node/525594, which you may want to take part in.

But in the short term, the API keys are not mission critical to the first running of the site - so could they be moved to an admin screen, and once the site is installed, user1 sees a prompt to go to that page and fill in the details?

Yep, I have this one the very short list of things to do, we should hopefully see this implemented in the next few weeks.
