I've noticed that clicking on an author's name will take you to all bibliography items by authors of the same surname, not just that author's works. I thought this might have been because the firstname and surname were separate links, but have checked and they are definitely the same one.

It would be really good if this could be fixed, as it is otherwise an extremely helpful feature.

This is fixed in the 6.x series, where author handling has been completely reworked and author information is stored in a separate table.

Due to time constraints and a looming 7.x release, the chances of this getting ported back to 5.x are slim.

Unless you have some really serious reason not to use Drupal 6.x, I would highly recommend upgrading.
