I am sure I have overlooked something somewhere, but I cannot find what seems to be a relatively common need and does not exist. Setting up sites for conferences/events happens often enough that there is a need for a "recipe" or template (not in the theme sense) for such sites. I would assume such a recipe would be driven by an install profile that would select "standard" modules.
Does anyone know of such a thing? I could sure use one real soon.

one version
There's one version at http://drupal.org/project/cod
Ezra and I have been discussing working on that profile for a while now given Ezra's recent work with Ubercart Signup Integration.
That profile is in a pretty rough state. However, if you are just looking for a recipe you can learn a lot by looking at the .profile file.

Thanks
Thanks, Greg. I'd really hate to use D5 at this point, but the profile might help.

A g.d.o group around similar
A g.d.o group around similar topics exists at http://groups.drupal.org/event-management-systems
Also http://drupal.org/node/519100 is the LA Drupalcamp site bundle which is somewhat specific for camps but has good starting places for lots of things.

for some ideas etc.
Personally i do think that CiviEvent meets the needs fairly well for a certain set of standard cases. 3.0 introduces more functionality including waitlisting and approval before registering
