Hi

I am supposed to refurbish or do a site anew for a customer.
The problem is the reseller, who also happened to build the site & set up the domain has long been abroad and cannot not be contacted. Before departing, there was no problem & the owner did not even bother to get the hosting account details (ftp login, etc). He was just a call away. She does not quite understand all this stuff.
The customer, is getting impatient and wants her business site going, after re-locating.
Is there any way, to discard this host & use the domain name elsewhere?
The site content is not a problem, as I have managed to download it.

Thanks in advance.

Is that domain registered on same company where it hosts or another ?
If domain registered on another company then simply you would go there and edit name servers for that domain pointing to the new hosting server.

Thanks for the quick response.
My customer unfortunately knows nothing about the details.
She had entrusted everything to do with the site to this web designer, otherwise if she knew or had the domain registration or hosting account details, I could have something to work with.

This happens from time to time. Let me suggest a course of action.

1. Use a "Who Is" search to find out where the domain name is registered. (E.g http://www.whois.net/)
2. The report should indicate who the domain registrar is, as well as where the site is hosted.
You may have to google some terms to find the actual company.
3. Many registrars and hosting companies have procedures for gaining control of domains and accounts upon furnishing of appropriate proof of ownership.

Hi

I did that & found out where the domain is registered & the hosting company. The site, though is being hosted through a reseller, which has complicated things, since as I mentioned is somehow not available (& happens to have registered the domain & made the site as well on the customers behalf & has so has the relevant data).
The "mother" hosting company said they could not release any ftp data, etc. They told her there's only one way out, involving something like cancelling the account or domain or something I'm yet to exactly establish.
I'm trying to figure out what to do next.

Thanks for your input.
