There is a 5.x version floating around on ubercart.org. Would it be possible to get it in the Drupal CVS?

Just FYI that module is here: http://www.ubercart.org/contrib/5049 - unfortunately since Drupal 5 is no longer supported, I'm setting this to Won't Fix.
