I think that this is worth a look from the Drupal devs:

XStandard is a well-known WYSWYG editor with remarkable accessible XHTML + CSS output. This is basically a marketing agreement to let open source CMSes integrate a cross-breed version of XStandard (it's the Lite version plus a number of Pro features). Do not know if it can viable, but, as I said, at least worth a look.
From the website:
How The Open Source CMS Program Works
We are making XStandard Lite with some Pro features available to established vendors of open source CMS who wish to offer XStandard as an optional editor in their applications.
-- snip --
This partnership program with open source CMS is a marketing agreement. We offer open source CMS vendors some features in XStandard that we would normally charge for. In exchange, open source CMS vendors offer a prominent link on their home page to the new, educational site xhtml.com. The site (currently under construction) will promote XHTML, accessibility and Web standards.
If you are a vendor (a member of the core development team or an authorized representative) of an open source CMS and would like to explore this partnership further, please contact us at partners@xhtml.com. Open source CMS users should contact their CMS vendor instead, if they would like to see the CMS vendor take advantage of this partnership opportunity.

Draw back to Xstandard
One (big in my opion) drawback to Xstandard is it requires the client to download something.
Right, but...
...isn't valid XHTML 1.1 output worth it? Most editors which don't require plugin installation in the browser rely on the browser's HTML generation, often followed by trying to automatically clean/convert the input. The results are not always as expected. In my own comparisons of several editors (HTMLarea, FCKeditor and XStandard) the latter ones code was lightyears ahead of the other ones in its validity and accessibility and I am currently looking for a module allowing me to use it in drupal (or considering to write one myself).
While drupal's license won't allow non-opensource code to be distributed with the main application, I hope somebody from the team will consider this opportunity wisely and arrange for this feature-rich version of XStandard to become usable in drupal by means of an externally-hosted module, because other module authors only would be able to distribute the somewhat crippled Lite version.
Of course, XStandard cannot become the default editor due to it's limited browser support and installation requirement, but with a working IE and Firefox version available now and Safari support announced for the near future as well as its outstanding XHTML 1.1 code generation this sounds like a very interesting opportunity to me.
wouldn't hurt to have this
wouldn't hurt to have this available and all they want is a link to to xhtml.com
nobrainer really

I've written a module that integrates XStandard into Drupal.
