I am still a Drupal newb, built a few small sites to pay some bills, but have a much bigger project now. While I am a serious geek, PHP isn't my forte. My background is design, more front end and a heavy Dreamweaver user.
This site will have 100 plus technical articles that should be broken down into 5-6 top level categories and then 4-5 sub categories. A third level might be nice but could be lived without.
The way Topics are handled on A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/topics/) is perfect! It has the categories, their description and the number of articles listed out in the body. Sub categories are listed out below each category, just like Taxonomy terms. Clicking the top level link takes you to a list of the sub categories, which looks just like the top level layout. Clicking a term at the top level goes straight to the sub category. All the articles would reside under the sub categories.
I spent over 8 hours yesterday working with Taxonomy, CCK, views, reading dozens of sites, hundreds of posts, watching dozens of videos, and just about everything else I could find, but couldn't find anything to get me on the right track. The closest I came up with was Taxonomy Blocks, but that still puts the drill down in a block and doesn't provide for descriptions or an actual sub category page.
Can this be accomplished with Views, Taxonomy and/or CCK? Didn't see anything that would get document counts. Any other modules that would help? Or is this going to be a bunch of custom programming?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated! It is easy to see Drupal's power, just having a hard time grasping the finer points. I would really like to start working Drupal into my core business.
