Been looking at a sharing module http://drupal.org/project/sharethis http://drupal.org/project/addtoany http://drupal.org/project/share why so many? Any recommendations?

As the module maintainer (and from addtoany.com), I can say that AddToAny offers much more flexibility and is inherently more optimized. :-)

The big concern here is that most of the "Link Share" tools for drupal are tied to third party services. Ideally this would be an "open" solution that would not be encumbered by reliance on a third party.

On a related note, the Open Sharing Icons are meant to be tool-agnostic:

Looks like AddToAny is taking the right approach, with the exception of being dependent on the AddToAny service :)
