Using drupal version 4.7 under administrator->settings->upload you can set the allowed file extensions for the user you are logged in as.
I only needed it for my administrator account but I'm assuming for other accounts you would have to give them access to the administer menu then log in as them and change their allowed file extensions that way.

ryooki commented? turns out it works fine if I upload a .jpg file. What's the point of a disk node if you can't use it with Zip files?
