I installed the front module and it works nice - allows me to add extra content to the home page... but how do I show the say "latest 5 blog posts" on the home page as well?

You can paste one of the many php snippets from here http://drupal.org/node/23220 into the front_page text areas for anonymous/authenticated users and check the ALLOW PHP option...
