Why is Description tag taken from the Site slogan?

When I edit a page and enter the descripton in the Nodewords fieldset, it does not show up in the page source. Instead it appears a global setting is in effect that uses the format [site name] : [site slogan]

How do I override the global setting so that each page I create will use a unique description tag? I cannot find anything in the Nodewords module settings.
