I have tried using both GoDaddy and iPower's web hosting. I am not happy with either. It seems the base Drupal install runs fine but by the time you add 15+ modules or so the site becomes unusable in terms of load times and server errors (503).
I am curious if others are having, or have had, this type of problem.
Most importantly, I want to know if others have had better luck just running it on some sort of (virtual) dedicated server versus a generic web hosting plan.
Any feedback on "working" hosting companies would be appreciated.

I have a shared and a VPS
I have a shared and a VPS account. Both are ok. Actually you should look for shared hosting unless you need really a VPS.
you may find good hosts at webhostingtalk.com
Only ever run drupal under
Only ever run drupal under reseller accounts (one mine, another on a friend's that I maintain a site for) on shared hosts and they do all right :)
