Most of related projects have decided to join forces on a new Inline API, most notably http://drupal.org/project/inline and http://drupal.org/project/linodef. Any chance InsertNode could join them?

Since they are saying that they will include the functionality of InsertNode, I guess I don't have to do anything. 8-)

No, that's actually wrong :)

We badly need more developers to join the Inline API effort, especially, because this whole thing also needs a tight integration with Wysiwyg module.
