I need to upgrade a number of modules on a Drupal 5 site. The core is still 5.19, and many modules haven't been updated in almost 2 years.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/tips/warnings anyone can offer me related to upgrading the Image module from 5.x-1.6 to 5.x-1.9. Please let me know if I should provide any additional information about what's running on this site, etc.

5.x-1.6 to 5.x-1.9 should be a fairly minor upgrade and I wouldn't be concerned about it. You can check the release notes (follow 'all releases' on the project page) and have a quick read of them.
As always, it is safer to try an upgrade on a test copy of your site first. And always back up your database!
