Is there a way to hide the right or left column for specific pages or sections other than the admin section, for instance when viewing gallery pages?

One method (depending on how many pages there are)

if there are no blocks set to show on a specific page the sidebars will not show.

administer -> blocks
edit the block
check block visibility settings
