Description

#421896: New D6 version just a few weeks away and #553900: Replace this module with multigroups + (new) multigroup validator reveal that:

  • This module has little developer interest, or at least its priority is far below other modules the developers are working on.
  • This module almost entirely duplicates other modules and has no competitive advantage.
  • Any functionality unique to this module probably ought to be implemented with simpler constructs.

The logical conclusion is to abandon this module and refocus efforts on making other modules better.

@Aren Cambre What are the alternatives? Have you contacted the maintainers?

Once these two points are addressed, this should be a transfer ownership if no other options exist or abandon if others exist. The reason for doing this is to try and reduce the amount of work that the drupal webmasters need to do when they address the issue.

This issue queue for this is the "drupal.org webmasters" as only the (inactive?) maintainers address issues in the modules issue queue.

I am writing as the maintainer of the Drupal 5 version.

What do you mean by abandoning this module? 800 people appear to be downloading it each week according to the stats.

Given that there is no Drupal 6 version I would say that people are going elsewhere anyway, but the Drupal 5 version still has plenty of action.

New Zeal: I am writing in response to #421896: New D6 version just a few weeks away. People should be made aware that this module will probably not be migrated to D6. Since D7 is around the corner, the module's home page needs to make it clear this module should not be used for any purpose than for D5 sites that already use Address field for CCK. Site maintainers looking for new uses of geolocation should not use this module.

Alan D.: The alternative is Addresses, which has more than 3X as many users.

Also, this is the appropriate and recommended way of raising the issue. You raise it here before advancing the process. Clearly given #2 the module is not abandoned, but its use should be strongly discouraged outside of the two use cases I identified above.

You will need to contact rconstantine about that. When Drupal Admin added me as co-maintainer for some reason I was made the chief maintainer and a whole lot of commits credited to me that I hadn't done. I'm just the lackey around here:)
