Issue Summary
Perhaps this is more of a server configuration issue, however it seems the file cache does not seem to work unless I set the cache_menu directory permissions to 777. This could be a security issue couldn't it? Is there some configuration I should be changing to make this not necessary?

I can confirm I ahve the same issue. The messages log shows various errors:
Apr 2 10:14:20 server drupal: ****|1301735660|cache|*****|******/field_email||0||Cache write error, failed to open file "sites/*****/files/filecache/cache_menu/4/*******.perm"Every single error is to do with "cache_menu" and as the previous poster said, unless the directory permissions are changed to 777, the error stays.
