I'm building an online dictionary and like how the taxonomy system works. Would there be any drawbacks to giving each word of a language (two different languages) it's own term? I guess I'm taking the sense of 'vocabulary', 'term', and 'syllable' quite literally!

i had about 75 thousand terms under a vocabulary and it's not a good idea.

most of the website didn't suffer and performance loss, but the other components are not designed to handle such a large number. On a page that you can manually select a term, all 75 thousand option fields are also downloaded, obviously slowing everything down.

therefore, keep the number of terms to a minimum.
