Issue Summary
I have attached a port of the Goofy theme to the smarty templating engine.
The images are the same except that they have been given transparent backgrounds.
The theme is not entirely faithful to the original, but there are alternative .tpl files for folks to play with.
It also includes a tweaked version of phptemplates.php and image_gallery.tpl that works for me.

I don't intend to do a smarty version unless sufficient demand happens, but maybe you could port your new features to the new phptemplate versions for D6 ?
