Issue Summary
I run a site that has a few different content types. Is there a way to get @username and #hashtag tags to work in the bodies of these other content types or in comments?
As great as the statuses themselves are, this tagging system is what most interests me about this, giving users an easy way to refer to stuff. it's be great to be able to use it outside of just facebook statuses.

That's not currently possible. I was planning to write an input filter at some point, but after a quick initial attempt proved more difficult than I expected a few months ago, I put the idea on the backburner. At this point I won't get around to it until late in the 3.x branch at least.
You might want to check out the Mentions module though. It has some limitations--namely that you always have to use square brackets, and it supports users, nodes, and comments but not taxonomy--but it's effective, and the maintainer has been very responsive to me in the past.
