Looking for a developer for a community site

leenwebb - November 4, 2009 - 17:30

The Background:
This is a Ning-like site for a single very focused community (something like, but not exactly: "youth-focused social workers in NYC"). I built a site kinda like this for my client for a different community, and I didn't enjoy the process -- too many nuts and bolts and modules and bits and pieces for my taste. So for this project we're taking on a management role and we want you to do the nitty-gritty site building for us!

Here is document describing a lot of what the project entails ( http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/849188/professionalPortal_drupalized.doc ), with modules I was planning on using to achieve each goal in bold. I am not married to those modules and am open to other ways of getting the job done, but they seem like good matches for my needs.

Theming:
Our graphic designers will design this site, and we'll give you a PSD to translate. OR, if you are wise in the ways of development but not so keen on theming (hey, me too!), I can happily have someone else do the theming once the development is done. Please let me know which is the case -- theme included or no.

Attitude / Philosophy:
I already wrote this theme-focused posting over here http://drupal.org/node/616238 and though of course not all the specifics apply to this project, the basic attitude is the same: we are anal, and we want you to be, too.

I love Drupal but I think that about 40% of my time is taking AWAY options that the user doesn't need. Most modules are built to be oh-so-expandable and usable in crazy fringe cases (and that's GREAT especially if I am one of those fringers) but honestly sometimes I just want a freakin' simple button. You know? So I want to make sure you're on the same page with me on that, that anything that could possibly confuse a user or offer them choices they don't need should be hidden or removed.

Most of the sites we build don't scream "DRUPAL SITE". We leave almost nothing with the default settings by the time the site goes live -- everything is customized.

The Job:
I'd love to get an estimate of how much money and how long you think this project will take. I realize that there's probably not enough in this post to give me that, so please email me with questions! I would LOVE to do a fixed-price on this contract but hourly might be OK as well.

PLEASE don't just copy-and-paste your resume/portfolio and send it to me. I want to learn a bit about you and why you think you're a good match for this project!

Thanks,
Eileen
