Can someone give me a quick rundown of what the difference is between a blog and a story and when each would be most useful?

It seems as though they're identical except that blogs are separate by each user (and possibly grouped together via taxonomy/pushing to the front page). Is that right?

So, if I want a single-blog site, Stories is probably the way to go? No?

What if I have multiple contributors to that one blog? Will story still list each article as by a separate contributor?

Variants of this question have been asked, but I'm just trying to figure out what the best practices are for when to use each.

Thanks!

A story is a piece of news as opposed to a page which is a static article.

A blog is entirely different as you yourself explain -- have a look at Spread Firefox -- each user has their own blog but they can add news (stories) that are related to Firefox ot to the website.

I suppose you could disable most modules to use Drupal as a blog but if you really want a blog you ought to use Word Press or Dot Clear.

I suppose you can only use stories too as you suggest to run a blog-like web site but Drupal is aimed at an interractive website based on a community of users and it's a bit of a pity no to use all its features.

My 2 cents as I am still a Drupal newbie

Cheers :-)

You will want to check out Introduction to Drupal terminology and the next three pages sooner than later to help you out with the terminology you are coming to grips with.

You may also want to check out this link Single user blog - basic in our admitatly sparce site-recipe section.

Thanks for the tip. I did read pretty much the whole handbook, and it was quite clear on the difference between Story and Page, but less clear on Blog vs. Story.

The reason I was attracted to Drupal in the first place is that I need to host a variety of content: Static pages, searchable "news" entries that may be relevant for quite some time, and software downloads. Plus I want to have all of this stuff indexed and cross-linked, regardless of category. Drupal's taxonomy module and wide variety of node types seems ideal for this job, and the administrative overhead on Drupal is so very low compared to some other CMSes, that I remain pretty convinced it's the right tool for the job. (Even if I don't need community, per se.)

Since I'm organizing my site solely using taxonomies and the taxonomy menu module, it seems that it's pretty irrelevant which node type I use, provided I give readers access to the final result.
