For the slideshow you can use Views with the Views Slideshow module to get a slideshow of images and/or content in a block. Set the View to display as a block and place the block on the #content-top region. Then set the block to 100% width so it takes up the full width of the area it's placed in.
And for the bottom list with news and an image I would think to use Views again to display the content and the specific image field. Set the View to display as a block and place it in the #content-bottom region so it appears below the content on the page. Then set it to 100% width so it takes up the full width of the area as well.
