Log shows "403.shtml" errors for theme elements that *are* present

My log shows multiple errors of this sort:

Type page not found
Date Monday, May 8, 2006 - 1:52am
User Anonymous
Location /themes/Madhava/menu-collapsed.png
Message 403.shtml not found.
Severity warning
Hostname 69.181.186.128

where "Madhava" is a theme identical to "Bluemarine" except for some non-crucial changes in css.

The same error message shows up for "menu-expanded.png" and "menu-leaf.png."

These "png" files are present both in the "Madhava" folder and Drupal's "misc" folder. And as far as I can tell, these png files are displayed to my users. That is, functionality is normal.

My folder permissions are set to "775," file permissions to "644."

What then might be the cause of these error messages? Some issue on my host's server? Or what?

I've seen similar issues raised in other texts, but saw no answers that specifically address this circumstance. Advice welcome.

Cordially,
O Govinda

Thanks in advance.
