Project based site (kinda like sourceforge)
Hi all,
I always get a smile on my face, when someone posts 'can xxx do it'. Yet, this time it's me who needs some advise.
I'm more of a joomla person (please don't shoot me), with which I've have build +10 sites, which is not a lot, granted, but I'm not a pro webdesigner. I always liked the power of joomla, and its extensions are simply impressive. Yet, this time I'm not sure whether Joomla can do the job.
Main features for the site I'm after: a bit like 'sourceforge', when creating a project the users get a forum, file storage system, gallery, chat... In other words: users who register can create a project and by doing so their account is linked to the project which includes some kind of project profile, a basic task manager, message board, a basic file repository, images... So in a sense a 'project management' tool, yet user friendly and quite some features.
Couple of questions:
- would that be hard to install/set up?
- How much would it require to do custom coding?
- will the release of joomla 1.6 change much about the site (permissions...)?
- Would it be hard to e.g. control the permissions on each of those modules. Say a top-down permissions system stating that no template is viewable unless the project leader decides it is...?
- Can a project profile be extended with additional fields (e.g. website link...)?
- Would it be hard to integrate with e.g. facebook accounts?
- Would it require the superbundle in the first place?
- Should I look at collaboration systems (e.g. bricolage, Alfresco...) or is Drupal very fit to do so? With fit I mean: yep, not a biggie. I assume that you 'could' do it, so I'm not after replies such as 'sure, anything is possible'. I'm more after answers like: well you could, but there are system who do this far better. Or 'despite the fact that there are systems who could do a good job, Drupal surely can...'
So the main questions are:
- Is Drupal abel to?
- Are there systems you guys know of who are more fit to do the job?

Try the project* modules.
The release of Joomla 1.6 will have absolutely no effect on a site built in Drupal.
If you want SourceForge, try looking at the information available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SourceForge_Enterprise_Edition.

Ok, will look into the project modules.
What do you mean with:
I assume that you're referring to the fact that the implemented ACL and some other features will not have much effect on this kind of project. Overall, it's a great improvement I believe, though the thing I'm after indeed is probably not going to be easier with joomla 1.6 and most likely not even with 1.7 (CCK is planned to come out of the box with 1.7).
Yet, don't think that the entreprise of sourceforge is the thing I'm after. I'm not looking for dev, but for the ability to automatically assign dedicated forums (or kind of dedicated) to users when they build a group/project. And preferably a very easy way to do so, since the target audience is not devs but very much end-users.
But I'll look into the project modules...
You asked:will the release

I answered that question.
As for sourceforge, you should read the entire article I linked to.

I answered that
Yep, bad question, not really relevant, anyway...
Thanks will do.
Cheers
So it sounds like sourceforge
So it sounds like sourceforge is not what you want. Look at Organic Groups.
