Can't Create or Edit Content - Save and Preview Issues?

I really hope someone can help me - I am so pleased with my site, but there is one big problem - I have seemingly lost the functionality of the Save and Preview buttons - when clicked, they return to the edit/ or add/ page. Added/edited content is still in the fields, but no new or edited node is generated.
I have recently undergone a lot of novice PHP admin edits due to previous xml sitemap module errors. I deleted all of the database references to xml sitemap, which is when I learned that I also deleted some useful stuff somehow. Clearly uninstall does not work as it's supposed to. I have also recently embedded Gallery2, if that makes a difference. Everything with the Create and Edit, Save and Preview buttons worked fine before all that. It's been a LONG three days of trying to get everything to work properly - I'm still getting some error messages, but I have never been able to completely avoid them. There are no new error messages when submitting new or edited content. I've searched the web extensively, I've searched the forums, and now I come the the Drupal community for advice.
Please let me know if you need any additional information - I don't yet know how generate a list of all the technical information that you might need - please just coach me along if necessary.
I hope that some possible solutions or even questions come to mind. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
