I can upload a custom thumbnail and it shows before I save the node. Once I save it, the thumbnail does not exist in the node. It's in the files directory but not associated with the node. The default thumbnail does show in the teaser mode instead of the uploaded version.

This issue has been documented in this thread- http://drupal.org/node/601466
You can't hit upload after you've browsed for your thumbnail. You just have to directly save the node. Then your new custom thumbnail will be saved, and shown.

Perfect, thanks. I didn't come across it in previous searches. It works for custom thumbnails now but my Vimeo thumbnails still aren't automatically downloading. Sound like a different issue. I will search for some other Vimeo threads. Regards, Brent.
