Can anyone tell me how to play a video in the front page image section of Slate ?

Yes, I would like to know this too --- Is there a way to add a video to the block that holds the background image?

By default the front page image area is there to hold the Mission Statement and the Preface Sidebar regions. You can manually add a new region in that area and also to your .info file and get anything to play there. So by default that's just not possible, but it can be altered to handle such a requirement though.
