Wouldn´t it be great if the friend request message was delivered via private message module?
You could even use the messaging-framework and let that handle the private message integration.

If messaging is enabled it will already use it.

THis doesn't work for for D7 and no plans to provide this integration at this time.

If someone would like to write it, I'll be happy to review.
