After many hours I know that I have this problem:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function memory_put() in /themes/engines/phptemplate/phptemplate.engine on line 12
Drupal 6.14
Code fresh; sites/all/modules renamed.. but anyway its the themes engine...
And I did know that there would be days like this!
Any help is very much appreciated.

Don't do things when very tired!
Returning to this after a good rest I was able to resolve it in moments...
Although I had thought I'd given myself a nice fresh set of Drupal 6.14 files I hadn't.
Once I'd re-wget'ed the files, deleted the existing theme and includes folders and copied a fresh set it all works again.
Readers can fill in the moral of the story!
