I was using a one row, two column flexible layout with style "rounded corners" selected for the region on the right and everything worked great.

Then I added a variant and selection criteria based on user roles. What I noticed was that the original variant began to cause some bugs in the theme's css (a lot of backgrounds disappeared and font sizes changed) and this continued to happen so long as the "rounded corners" style was enabled and I had selection criteria for that variant. Disabling either the selection criteria (ie. having one variant) or changing the region style to "no style" got the page to render correctly.

There, I've tried my best to describe this bizarre issue! If there's any further information needed I'd be more than happy to post it.

That's very strange, and I don't have any immediate ideas. Are you able to duplicate this behavior with a fairly minimal content set? If you can provide an export that doesn't utilize site specific content or data (like node types etc) that demonstrates this it would make it a lot easier to track down.

Another thing to consider would be whether or not site caching is available.
